Wind Turbine Blade Transport in India

Extra-long blades and tower sections planned around every turn, bridge and junction on the way to site.

Wind turbine blade transport is one of the most demanding kinds of ODC (over dimensional cargo) movement in India. Blades are extremely long, relatively light for their size and easily damaged, and wind farms are usually far from cities on narrow rural roads. Gurmeet Road Carrier plans these moves from Chennai and Tamil Nadu to project sites across the country.

Tamil Nadu is one of India's leading wind energy states, so oversized wind components are a familiar sight on the roads around Chennai.

01

Why blades are a special kind of ODC

A blade's length is the main challenge. Its overhang beyond the trailer changes how the vehicle turns, and every curve, roundabout and village junction has to be checked in advance. The blade's surface must be protected from scratches and stress, and support points have to follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Tower sections, nacelles and hubs bring their own problems: tower sections are wide and heavy, and nacelles are tall and heavy. Each component is planned separately.

02

Route survey for wind farm logistics

Before any blade moves, the route is surveyed from pickup to site. We look at turning radii, road widths, bridges, overhead cables, trees, signboards, toll plazas and the final approach road to the wind farm. Where obstacles exist, we plan alternatives or temporary measures with the relevant authorities.

The survey decides the trailer configuration, the escort plan and the best time to move.

03

Extendable trailers and escorts

Blades are typically carried on extendable trailers that can be lengthened to suit the cargo. Pilot and escort vehicles travel with the load to warn traffic and guide the driver through tight sections. Permissions for over-length movement are arranged as part of the plan.

04

Delivering to the site

Wind farm access roads are often unpaved and steep. We discuss site conditions with your team beforehand so the blade can be delivered and positioned where your cranes can reach it. Exact routing and timing are confirmed for each project; call us to discuss yours.

The photo on this page shows one of our extra-long girder loads on an extendable trailer, the same kind of planning used for long wind components.

Information we need for wind component moves

For each component, share the length, weight, support and lifting points, and any manufacturer handling instructions. Tell us the dispatch location, the wind farm location and the condition of the site access road. If you are moving a full set of blades, towers and nacelles, we plan the components together so the deliveries arrive in the order your erection team needs them.

Wind projects across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra all receive components by road, and each region has its own road conditions to consider.

Do you transport wind turbine blades from Chennai?

Yes. We plan wind turbine blade and component transport from Chennai and Tamil Nadu to project sites across India.

What trailer is used for wind blades?

Blades usually travel on extendable trailers configured to the blade length, with escort vehicles. The exact setup depends on the blade and route.

What do you need to quote blade transport?

Blade length, weight, support points, pickup location and site location. Call +91 9884867335 / 9884867339 or WhatsApp us with your load details.
